”ナニ”から12年―この街には、”ナニ”で被災した人々が身を寄せる仮設住宅があった。 今もまだ、18世帯ものワケあり住人が暮らしていたが、月収12万超えると「即立退き」とあって、皆ギリギリの生活を送っていた。主人公の田中新助こと半助は、街で見たもの、聞いた話を報告するだけで「最大一万円!」もらえると軽い気持ちで、この街に潜入する。だが、半助こそ ”ナニ”によって何もかも失い、ただ生きているだけの男だった。しかし、ギリギリの生活の中で、逞しく生きるワケあり住人らを観察するうち半助は次第に、この街の住人たちを好きになっていく。そんな中、仮設住宅が取り壊されるという噂が街に流れはじめるのだが…。
