山田きょうと山田あすは、ふたりっきりで暮らす中学生と小学生の姉妹。父はギャンブルで借金を作って蒸発、母とは死別という困難のなか、決してふさぎこむことなく元気に毎日を送っています。 きょうは中学校に通いながら、新聞配達や家庭教師、時には臨時のバイトを入れながら家計を支えています。あすはお家でご飯をつくったり、お掃除をしたり、家事全般を担当してお姉ちゃんを支えています。そして二人の周囲には、見守ってくれる人たちがいます。 辛いこと、困ったこともたくさんあるけれど、お互いがそばにいれば、きっと大丈夫。築40年で風呂なし1K、家賃2万6000円のアパートで生きる姉妹の、優しい物語が始まります。
