戦国時代の房総半島安房国、里見家に殺された玉梓（菅野美穂）の呪いから逃れるべく自害した伏姫（仲間由紀恵）の腹8つの玉が飛び散った。伏せ姫の許婚だった大輔（渡部篤郎）は出家して、その玉を探す旅に出る…。 仁義礼智忠信孝悌とそれぞれ記された8つの玉を持つ若者たちが、やがて危機に瀕した里見家を救うという、滝沢馬琴が江戸期に記した超大河小説を原作とした時代劇TVムービー大作。小説からインスパイアされたオリジナルストーリーで攻めた深作欣二監督の映画版とは大いに異なり、勧善懲悪を前面に打ち出した気持ちのよいエンタテインメントに仕上がっている。滝沢秀明ら八犬士の面々もそれぞれ個性豊かに描かれているが、怨霊と化した女の執念と哀しみをともに際立たせる菅野美穂の演技力にはいつもながらに感嘆させられる。ともあれ、こうした古典が時を越えて映像でよみがえるのは喜ばしい傾向ではある。
