昭和27年夏。金田一耕助（古谷一行）は、京都の山村で地元の青年・貞夫（四禮正明）の失踪と、次々に墓があばかれる事件に遭遇した。金田一は、墓の中で持田という死者の遺体から頭蓋骨だけが盗まれていることに、貞夫との関連があるとにらんだ。貞夫は、数日前に劇的な再会を果たした学生時代の恋人・虹子（丘みつ子）の弟だった。そして持田は虹子の夫だった人物で、亡くなった当時、彼女が毒殺したという疑惑が持たれていたという。運命的かつ皮肉な再会に、金田一は虹子への複雑な思いを抱く。やがて貞夫が不審な死を遂げる…。
