四三（中村勘九郎）は、東京高等師範学校でのマラソン大会で3位に入賞。表彰式で憧れの嘉納（役所広司）に短いながらも声を掛けられる。さらに発奮した四三は敗因を自己分析し、むちゃな練習を敢行する。一方、嘉納は日本初のオリンピック予選の開催を前に、山積する難題を抱え、頼みの綱としていた弥彦（生田斗真）も当てにならずに頭を悩ませる。こうした嘉納の苦労を弟子の五りん（神木隆之介）に語るうちに志ん生（ビートたけし）は、つい酒を飲んでしまう。そして志ん生は、ほろ酔いの状態で高座に上がる。
